It is important to mention that flies are attracted by the sweet and irresistible smell of fermentation and thus enter the trap through the holes in the plastic wrap. The plastic wrap is an invisible wall as the flies cannot find the holes and escape.

#ACV Trap

Rotting or fermenting fruits are a delicacy for flies and the apple cider vinegar actually is fermented apple juice. With the help of ACV you can lure variety of flies. In order to make the trap deadlier, you add a little bit of dish soap to the ACV. On this way, the surface tension of the liquid will be broken by the dish soap and the flies simply will sink on contact.

You will need:

  • 2 cups Apple cider vinegar (smell of ACV attracts flies)
  • 1 tablespoon Liquid dish soap (flies sink and drown in dish soap)
  • Mason jar
  • Plastic wrap
  • Toothpick

In a mason jar pour 2 cups of ACV and add 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap and mix. Next step is to secure the mouth of the jar with plastic wrap. In order to seal the jar completely, you should stretch a piece of plastic wrap over the mouth of the jar. Then, poke few holes into the plastic wrap. By using a toothpick, make multiple punctures in the plastic wrap and on this way you will let the flies into the trap.

Place the trap on a place where you have noticed flies. Once you notice dead flies, clean the jar and place it again.

#Fruit Trap

Instead of ACV trap, you can prepare fruit trap and you will get a similar effect. For this trap you should use overripe or rotten fruit. Namely, the fruit trap will not kill the flies, but it will capture them efficiently. Later, you can decide how to dispose the flies. This trap is cheaper than the ACV trap.
